Kinja'd!!!

Played around with two bikers on my way home from work. One on a street triple, another on a “ 600 ”

The wagon is preeee tty slow off the line due to traction issues and maybe other things , I honestly think the Miata would crush it in a... Oh I don’t know. 25 ft dash? 50? Even on snow tires the Miata hooks instantly, zero wheelspin. Volvo... Not so much.

That said, if the Volvo is already going 15+ mph and you bury the throttle... The acceleration is e xplosive. Bag- of- bricks to the face levels of OOMPH.

I came up to a stoplight that the two bikers were waiting at— both in the same lane— and timed it in such a way that the light turned green right as I downshifted into 2nd at about 20mph. Blew past both of them, and carried speed up a steep, long hill, topping out 2nd gear and getting into 3rd. Guy on the 600 comes up on me rapidly and when we hit the next red light, shares my lane to ask,

“damn, what’s under the hood?!”

“stock engine, a lot of boost! What are you riding and how the hell does is sound so good?”

“a 600, I built the ex haust myself!”

Light turns green and I slowly t ake off, not super comfortable sharing a lane with a bike, so keeping the speeds low until I pull ahead or he decides to rocket past me. I’m letting my rpm climb in first, getting those nice 5 cylinder burbles out in the open. He stays back behind. I keep seeing the bike’ s headlight behind me flashing and almost disappearing, only later did I realize the guy was probably doing wheelies. Oh and did I mention how great the exhaust sounded?

Next stoplight the other guy comes up too, and mentions his old LS-swapped 240 wagon, saying that he loves the sleeper look.

Fun drive home. My commute doesn’t have any curvy roads any more, but it has some great straights, with high speed limits, no cops, great sight lines, and generally very little traffic.

Perfect for the boosted brick.

This leaves me with two thoughts.

One, I still feel like this wagon is one of the best all-around enthusiast vehicles out there— assuming it’s working—and if I could go back, I wouldn’t have picked anything else.

And tw o, boosted Miata with 250-300 w hp and ft/lbs of torque, minimal turbo lag and a bongo cat sticker would probably ruin every other car for me.

That sounds like a great end to the day.  I don’t think anyone in a six figure supercar is enjoying it more than you do yours.

I love it when strangers acknowledge  what you drive. It’s fun!

But back to you, my fickle man...

This week you love it, last week you’re gonna sell it... This is like dating that person who is bad at relationships but good at the genital touching stuff.

I feel like I need to keep one of my car slots rotating every month or two so I can sample more models. I wish taxes and registration weren’t so pricey. I miss being able to pay taxes on a “$5" car, instead of whatever values the department of licensing has stated using lately.

It’s a good feeling.

I think my metaphorical girlfriend and I have sorted out our issues and are now both happier for it!

But I also want money for new things, like a 540i, or a bike, or a Miata turbo kit. And the thought of dipping into funds for non-essentials m akes me break out into a cold sweat :(

Meh, you're young. Restraint today means greater spending opportunity tomorrow.

I’ve been in a v70R, it was impressive. I’m not a fan of bricks, but I love a good sleeper.

This is how I feel. Just rotate out a car when you want to try something new. (browses turbo  Volvos)

I’m remembering this analogy. I had one of those in college her name was Kitty.

I dropped my ‘84 Rampage at the Dodge dealership today to have some things checked out. The mechanics were PUMPED! One of them came bursting into the drop-off bay just yelling “RAMPAAAAGE!” Another one was jazzed it was a manual.

Every time I read one of your posts, I start looking for Volvos on CL. Then somebody tells me not to buy an old Volvo. But I love how they look, everyone says they’re comfortable, and you’re having so much fun with yours...

“850 ”, “850r”, “v70r”, “ s60r”, and “Volvo manual” are all frequent searches for me.

Craigslist is good, the classified section on Swedespeed is also good. Join the club! Look for large binders of maintenance history, or a price low enough that you'd be fine with any and all issues that *will* arise

Definitely. I'll probably get some high-performance all seasons next time, but I'm a little bit worried about breaking things if I turn up the grip too high

What about the S40? Seems like you can get them with a 6 speed and awd.

I’m not a huge fan of the exterior styling. And based off a quick Craigslist search, manual examples seem to be $5000+, which is s60r territory

I wish I could combine the 850 body with the RWD from the 700 and 900 series

That was a good read. I feel like I’m within a couple years of being able to rent out a sepperate garage... And when that happens. Oh man. Wanna come t o a junkyard with me and find a good doner?

That’s a great story. The off the line problem is that first gear is way too tall and without an lsd it’s hard to avoid the wheel spin. I don’t think you’ll break anything if you hook up well though. If you do, the cv axles are easy to replace. I used to love 2nd gear above about 3000 rpms. Lots of drama.

What turbo you have on the Volvo? How much boost she seeing?

I had a 1998 V70 T5 auto. Specifically the early model with no badges, and that badass spoiler. And for the Uber Volvo nerds, the auto tensioning timing belt. I loved that car beyond words, and  I still rue the day I sent her to the clunker pile. RIP sweet Volvee. I love Volvos in general, but I constantly look to acquire another one of the same vintage. I’d prefer a manual but honestly the 4-s peed slush box was half decent. Anyone know where I can find a 98 in Graphite Gray Metallic with the Gobi interior? I swear to this day, it was faster than my current 2016 Focus ST.

Well, t hat explains why the one I found for $4800 was sold. A t urbo V olvo seems like a great replacement for a turbo Subaru.
